Wakelin Wins Impressive Bomber Feature:
Langford, BC, April 25, 2009:
Brian Wakelin staged a great inside move to take the lead and the win in a very competitive Bomber Feature event at Western Speedway Saturday night. Starting from the eleventh position, Wakelin quickly moved into fourth to set up a great race with Chris Broughton and Lonnie Kiefert with many lead changes over the middle laps to the checkered flag.
Sean Connaroe drove to a victory in the popular "Van Chase". The Demo drivers caught him on the last lap but failed to turn him over. This is the second time Connaroe has kept his van upright in the flight to escape capsizing at the hands of the pursuers.
Larry Manson crossed the line first in the Demo Van Feature but was disqualified for missing a tire. This handed the win to first time driver Michele Haddon. She climbed out at Victory Square, jumped for joy saying: "I beat the boys, I beat the boys. Girls rock".
Brandon Young cashed in a win in the first race for him, winning the Trophy Dash in Figure 8 competition. He followed with a win in the Heat race while Cody Young won his Heat, with the other brother, Shawn taking the Feature event in a hard hitting affair.
Western Speedway hosted a Drifting expo featured by Capital Region Drifting on this night. According to their website, drifting is an 'everybody' autosport requiring only a rear-wheel drive car and a little bit of courage. It is also the only judged auto sport; meaning it's more about challenging yourself personally then it is competing with other drivers. This club is devoted to all drifters in the capital region. Their aim is to stop people from endangering themselves and others in the streets and to give them more of an opportunity to do what they love in a safe and fun environment.
George Haywood took the Demo Truck Feature plus captured a win in the Trophy Dash while Marc Parkinson continued his winning ways taking his second win in Demo Car competition. In the first race of the season, he garnered a clean sweep.
Thirteen cars lined up for a thirty lap Bomber Feature event with Dennis Stewart and Mike Dash sharing the front row. Chris Broughton jumped to the outside groove to take the lead on the second lap and quickly began to run away from the pack building a big lead until the caution came out with only five laps in the books. This began a series of green and yellow flags as several drivers took turns in spin outs and eventually a red flag as crews had to mop up a greasy track. On the eventual restart, Broughton still led the field but now had Wakelin and Ronnie Kiefert on his tail. Kiefert pulled alongside of Wakelin and ran side by side for several laps and then taking the second spot. Now running into lap traffic, Kiefert dove to the inside for the lead bringing Wakelin with him and into second while Broughton stayed outside and now pushed back into the third spot. On lap twenty-one, Kiefert went too hard into the corner and Broughton took advantage and went back to the lead again bringing Wakelin with him and into second. Broughton led for several laps but the wiley veteran used another inside move to pass Broughton on lap twenty-nine and went on to the checkered flag. Broughton hung on for second while Kiefert fought back for third. This had to be one of the best Bomber mains in some time and had the fans excited as these three drivers pulled inside, outside moves or running side by side, for close to twenty laps and the finish was a drag race to the checkered flag.
Next week end will again feature the Demo Cars, Trucks, Figure 8, and Mini Vans. These classes will be joined by the V.I. Rental Stock Cars. On April 18th, the "Captain" Kirk Peacey held off the competition and won the Feature event covering fifty laps.
