Smith Wins Stock Car 100 Lapper

Langford BC, June 20, 2009:

Western Speedway hosted a full program of racing with the L.P. Gear I.M.S. 4 Mini Stocks, Old Time Racers Association Series, the Late Model Series, and the V.I. Rental Stock Car Series. As well as the race program, Western hosted a Military night with a display of vehicles, ground manouvers, and a mock firing of one of the artillery guns. A "six and three quarters" year old Jessica sent a special thank you to her dad who just returned on the Winnipeg after "fighting pirates". A special tribute to all of our military troops to say the least.
Matt Szauer and Gilles Parenteau led the field to the green flag for thirty laps of racing in the L.P. Gear I.M.S. 4 Mini Stock Feature event with Parenteau gaining the advantage early. Mitch Egner and Mike Derepentigny quickly came up to challenge for the lead and ran side by side until Derepentigny gained the lead outright with Egner in second, Ryan Medenski running third followed by Parenteau and Lois Pollard-Grant. Egner and Derepentigny started to build a good lead over the rest of the field while the other drivers battled behind them. By lap fifteen, Gord Percival moved up to take over the fourth spot and started to gain on the leaders. Derepentigny dropped out with car trouble handing the lead to Egner followed by Medynski and Percival. Going into turn one, the top five cars running bumper to bumper and each one looking for the next position got together taking all top five contenders out. Lois Pollard-Grant running sixth came around and took the checkered flag. Alex Mouner crossed the line in second followed by Chris McCrimmon. At Victory Square no one was any more surprised than Lois. She said: "I don't know what happened and this car isn't just right but I'll take it".
Dano Ryan and Roger Beck shared the front row for the start of a thirty lap race for the OTRA Series. By lap ten Dan and Rob Morneau came through the pack working their way toward the front. Dennis Morneau worked his way up bringing Brian Clutchey, driving for James Campbell, up into the mix as well. Dan and Rob were involved in a furious battle for the lead with Rob trying everything to get by brother Dan. He darted outside and inside but Dan held the fort taking the checkered flag ahead of Rob. Bob Martin finished in third behind the two Morneaus. At Victory Square Dan said: "This is my fiftyith Feature win and it is great that I had my brother fighting me clean in this race. He never laid a bumper on me."
Brent Morris led for several laps, in the Late Model Series, until Tim Christy took over on lap twelve. Christy set a new track record plus won his Heat race earlier in the evening. Jason Tarasenko worked his way through the field to run second but could not catch the seven time Western Speedway Champion. Brent Morris who earlier won the Trophy Dash and his Heat race placed third.
One hundred laps was the distance to run in the V.I. Rental Stock Car Series with Jim Steen and Dave Reside bringing fifteen cars to take the green flag. Reside got the early advantage while Daryl Crocker and Steen settled in running second and third respectively. Ray Anderosov was also moving up to run with the leaders with Rory Smith coming from nowhere to take over the second spot. The yellow cam out on lap eleven as Ryan Wade went around on turn one. On the restart, Reside lead Smith with Anderosov and Aaron Wilkie in a tight battle behind them. After another yellow and a new restart, Anderosov put up a challenge for the lead and Smith used the occasion to run inside both Anderosov and Reside going three wide for the lead going through turn three and four. Kirk Peacey joined this bunch as Wilkie pulled into the pits leaving Peacey now running third as positions changed rapidly. Brian Clutchey and Brandon Carlson joined in the battle with the frontrunners as well. On lap forty, another yellow came out. On the restart, Smith still led followed by Anderosov, Peacey and Clutchey. On lap forty-six Peacey took over the second spot while Carlson moved into third. Over the next several laps, the field ran pretty close with no one getting a distinct advantage. With seventy plus laps in the books, Clutchey went into the pits with a broken brake rotor after running fourth. Peacey continued to challenge Smith for the lead as Carlson challenged Peacey for second. Over the next several laps these three drivers continued to challenge one another with Carlson taking second for a few laps as lapped traffic played a role in the pass of Peacey. On lap eighty-six, Peacey again gained the second spot but no one could take the lead from Smith who took the checkered flag ahead of Peacey and Carlson. Ray Anderosov and Kyle Cottam rounded out the top five.
Next weekend marks the return of the Demo Classes, Bombers, and the "Dukes of Hazzard" night. Some lucky girl will take home $200.00 if she wins the Daisy Duke contest. This night will feature a General Lee and a Roscoe P Coltrane car in "Hot Pursuit" around the Langford oval.
