Bumblebees & Hornets Swarm Western Speedway: Langford, BC, June 24th, 2009:                 An amazing sixty-four cars qualified for racing in the Bumblebee and Hornet Series on the very first night of the 2009 season. Last year it was close to the end of the season before this Series achieved sixty-three cars so if this is an indication look for more great racing on the close inside oval with lots of cars.                 No less than six Trophy Dashes, twelve heat races, a B Main, and two A Mains made up the race program for opening night that included Bumblebees, Rookies, and Experts. Heat race D for the experts proved to be a real thriller as Daryn Cahill, Rory Smith, Phil Lagan, and Daryl Cahill battled hard for the win virtually the whole ten laps. Daryn led the first five laps until Smith got by for the lead while Lagan and Daryl traded third and fourth. On lap nine, Daryn regained the lead and took the checkered flag by mere inches. Lagan regained the third spot and held off the hard charging Daryl Cahill taking the fourth spot.                 If the B Main is an indication of things to come, Rose Root and Cassandra Musfelt are set to resume where they left off last season. These two hooked up again in this race often running side by side and bumper to bumper from the drop of the green flag. This was just another episode of hard nosed racing in this Series with Root taking the checkered flag over last season's Champion Musfelt while John Leric came home in third.                 Marty Anctil and Gennifer Isles held the front row for the start of the twenty lap Feature event for the Rookies A Main. Isles got out front and led for the first seven laps until Stephen Sager took over the lead. Throughout the middle laps several cars were banging their way toward the front. on lap thirteen, Jordan Thomassen moved up to the second spot and Brandon Phillips also was coming on. On lap seventeen, Phillips took over second and followed Stephen Sager, the winner, accross the line with Thomassen hanging on to third.                 Garnet Bartlett and Steve Copp led a field of twenty-one cars for twenty-five laps of racing in the Expert A Main event.It only took Mike Meline three laps to grab the lead followed by Bartlett and Mike McPeek. By the ninth lap, Rory Smith moved into contention taking over in second by the eleventh lap. On Lap fourteen, Phil Lagan also moved up setting up a great battle between Meline, Smith, Lagan, and McPeek. Smith did get into Meline causing the leader to spin at the same time a yellow came out so Meline got his position back at the head of the field for a restart. Smith challenged for the remaining few laps but couldn't get by Meline. Smith held on for second while Lagan took third with Mark McKenzie and Steve Copp rounding out the top five.                 Racing on the tight turns through the infield makes for lots of bumping and grinding and is very entertaining to watch as everyone is trying to get to the front. The Feature events had twenty-plus cars on the grid at one time so room was at a premium. If this series continues to grow it should be fun watching all these drivers handle the larger fields.                 The next Wednesday night Hornets fall on July 1. This should prove to be a great thing to do on the Holiday.
