Weather Dampens Hazzard Night:
Langford, BC., June 27, 2009:

What was to be a very interesting night for a large crowd and participants of the "Dukes of Hazzard" night got a wet surprise at Western Speedway. The sun shone bright and warm virtually all day Saturday which lends itself to a promising night of head to head competition for the Demo Cars, Demo Trucks, Figure 8s, Mini Vans, and V.I. Rental Stock Cars. As an added attraction, Western Speedway hosted yet another theme night with a Dukes of Hazzard night complete with a police chase, a jump by a General Lee and a Daisy Duke contest. Tami Fairbairn, the singer for our National Anthem, was driven to Victory Square in a 1969 Dodge Charger, a complete and detailed replicar to the legendary General Lee to set the tone for the race program on this night. Willow Webb and Samantha Eldridge, the Western Speedway Trophy Girls, done their best Daisy Duke look-a-like handing out a few trophies and posing with the General Lee.
A Stock Car Trophy Dash was the first event won by Rory Smith followed by Kirk Peacey and Ryan Wade. Chris Broughton won the Bomber Dash followed by Brent Wildeman and Brian Wakelin. Aasen Baker was first in the Demo Truck Dash and had George Haywood and David Cates follow him to the checkered flag. A big crash in the Demo Car class took out two cars leaving Rich Hargraves and Smokin Joe Liberatore to duke it out. Hargraves passed Joe on the very last lap to claim the victory. Cody Young was victorious in the Figure 8 Class followed by J.J. Taylor and George Newell. The #88 Mini Van crossed the line ahead of David Dewitt and Larry Manson in the van Trophy Dash.
It was about here that the heavens opened up and dashed the hopes of a complete night of racing. Rain and the Stock Car Series do not lend themselves to side by side and bumper to bumper racing that we are accustomed to seeing. The Bombers and Demo Classes are still able to put on a show which they did. Rich Benson was the best on the slippery track and took the first of two Heat races while Brian Wakelin came home the victor in the second Heat. Keith Hanson proved he doesn't mind the rain taking the Demo Truck Heat race while Marc Parkinson drove to the win in the Demo Car Heat.
Track Officials decided that they could still do the Hazzard jump even with the rain coming down so Charles Andre, the Stunt Co-ordinator, began the task of setting up the ramp and catch vehicles to stop the General Lee. After a few chases up and down the front stretch with a Roscoe P Coltrane police car, Jeff "The Stuntman" Sanca pushed the General Lee look-a-like to the max jumping off the ramp and crashing through a travel trailor and car parked at the end of the front stretch. The jump went off without a hitch and the trailor exploded in a bunch of rubble from the impact of the hit. This stunt was quite spectacular to watch and the driver was unhurt, got out of the car and waved to the cheering crowd.
With the weather, as it were, slowed the stunt show up somewhat but give them credit for pulling it off under trying conditions providing a great finale to a shortened night.
