Garrett Smith Wins Tough Hornet Race: July 1, 2009:                 Another great car count was on tap for another installment in the Hornet Car Series at Western Speedway. Sixty-two cars qualified for Trophy Dashes, Heat races and Feature events for this Canada Day event and they would not disappoint. Jennifer Isles picked up her first trophy winning the Bumblebee Dash then topping that with a second place finish in the Rookie B-Main. At Victory Square Jennifer said: "This is the first trophy I ever won and this will go with the many my husband has won."                 Richard Shuck and Cameron Phillips shared the front row for the start of the B Main with Shuck taking the early advantage and leading for the first twelve laps. Behind him cars were dicing back and forth with Shane Syr, Graham Schuurman, and Ryan Hornett all in the mix. By the ninth lap, Jennifer Isles had worked her way through the field and was running fourth. On lap sixteen she gained the second spot running behind Hornett who had taken the lead three laps earlier. At the finish it was Hornett with the win with Isles in second and Schuurman in third.                 Ryan and Rhett Smith held the front row for the second Main Brandon Phillips taking the lead after just four laps.Behind him, Hornett and Steve Butt were wrestling for the second and third spot. There was a lot of banging and pushing virtually all night long as everyone wanted to get to the front. Hornett and buss continued to battle this whole eventtrading positions quite often. At the finish it was Phillips with the win while Schuurman placed second and Buss taking the third spot.                 Thirty laps would be the distance to run in the Feature event of the night. Jake Spring and Rocky Sandu lead twenty-six cars to the green flag and unleashed a flurry to get to the front. Spring got the advantage and led for the first six laps while Rory Smith was busting his way forward and into second spot two laps earlier and into the lead on lap seven. Just about everyone got into the mix that included Steve Copp, Mike Meline, Robin Trotter, and Bill Peacey. Again the bumping and grinding was the nature of the game as all drivers were intent on getting the lead. Spring, one of the early leaders had to enter the pits taking him out of the front pack of runners. On lap twenty-eight one of the many caution flags came out as there was another car turned around on the first corner. Spring had returned to the track earlier but suffered a fire in the rear end of his car causing a red flag condition. As the field was about to refire, Smith's car would not restart so he had to be pushed from the track ending his bid to win this race. On the eventual restart, Garrett Smith jumped quickly into the lead followed by Daryl Crocker and Robin Trotter. This would be the finishing order in a very rough and tumble event common to a large field of very competitive cars and drivers. This is just what spectators have come to expect in the Wednesday Hornet races as they field is usually into a high car count, lots of races, as as always a very entertaining series of Main events.                 The next race for the popular Hornet series will be held July 8th.
