Langford BC, May 12th, 2012:

Western Speedway and O’Dell Slinger Service hosted the Richlock Rentals Non Wing Sprint Cars, the Stock Car Series, and the Keg Steakhouse Bar & Grill Driver Challenge with the Late Models on Saturday night. The night began with Trophy Dashes for the Stock Cars and the Non Wing Sprints followed by Heat races and Feature events for all classes. Brian Clutchey returned to the Stock Car Series and won the Trophy Dash but had a slight engine problem before he blew the motor and was finished for the night. Jeff Bird found his way to Victory Square winning the Non Wing Sprint Car Dash. Heat race wins went to Rory Smith and Gary Smith in the Late Model Series, Wade Bland won the fast time award posting a 17:465 lap time, Matt Mansell and Rob Scott picked up the wins in the Non Wing Sprint Cars, while Ryan Wade and Chris McInerny won the Heat races in the Stock Car Division. Jason Tarasenko was on his way toward the win in the Late Model Heat when his car had a problem with the transmission and the car shut off for a few moments sending him almost to the rear of the pack. Dave Reside was leading the Stock Car Heat when he entered the pits when the belts came loose on his engine. McInerny grabbed the win and Kyle Cottam placed 2nd by winning the drag race to the flag with Brandon Steen in a close race. Rob Scott also had to win a drag race for the checkered flag over Ron French in Sprint Car Heats as they were side by side on the front stretch.

The first Feature event for the Keg Steakhouse & Bar Drivers Challenge saw Rory Smith on the pole with Tyler Clough on the outside front row in a field of eleven cars. Clough led the first three laps until he was overtaken by Smith. The battle for positions behind him was between Gary Smith and Darrell Midgley as they were working their way forward. On lap ten, Midgley took over the second spot and one lap later Jason Tarasenko moved up to third. On lap thirteen the first yellow came out as Clough spun around on turn one with everyone missing the spinning car. On the double file restart Smith had Midgley to his outside but quickly regained the lead with Midgley falling behind in second and Aaron Wilkie taking the third spot. Another yellow came out on lap fourteen as Steve Copp spun around and no damage done followed by another yellow on lap seventeen as Wilkie spun around with everyone missing this incident. On lap eighteen Wade Bland moved up to run third and Gary Smith followed to run fourth. For several laps Bland and Midgley drove door handle to door handle with Gary Smith in that mix and on lap twenty-one Bland finally cleared Midgley and took over the second spot. The field stayed clean throughout the remainder of the race and at the chequered flag it was Rory Smith with the victory folloed by Bland, Midgley, Gary Smith, and Tarasenko rounding out the top five positions.

The second Feature for the Keg Steakhouse & Bar Driver Challenge saw Tyler Clough on the pole with Aaron Wilkie on the outside. The first yellow came out early as Clough spun around in turn one and everyone was able to get around him. On the double file restart, Wilkie took the lead on the second lap followed quickly by Brandon Carlson and Jason Tarasenko. This green flag lap only lasteda short time as Clough went around again and everyone got by with Clough going to the pits. Tarasenko took over the second spot on lap five with Darrell Midgley moving up to run third one lap later. On lap eight, Tarasenko took over the lead with Wilkie running second and Midgley putting the heat on him running third and Wade Bland in fourth. Tarasenko began to stretch his advantage as Wilkie, Midgley, and Bland battled for the next positions. On lap fourteen Bland was able to get by Midgley for third as Gary Smith moved into the mix with Wilkie, Midgley and Bland. There was some great racing as Bland tried getting by Wilkie, then drop back to battle with Midgley and Gary Smith and then to take another run for second using the outside groove around the Speedway. These drivers changed positions several times but on lap twenty-five Bland got the upper hand and went into the second spot by himself. Up front, Tarasenko had a comfortable lead with the battle still intense between Gary Smith, Darrell Midgley, and Wilkie. When the chequered flag dropped Tarasenko gained the victory followed by Bland, Gary Smith, Wilkie, and Rory Smith occupying the top five positions.

Brandon Hutchinson led a field of thirteen Stock Cars to the green flag for thirty-five laps of racing with Dave Reside sharing the front row. Reside quickly jumped into the lead but the yellow came out very quickly as Hutchinson turned around going out of turn two and collected several cars that included Brandon Steen, Kevin Knight, and Dean Mackeney. That crash ended Knight’s race while Steen was able to tape his car up enough to get back on the track. On the double file restart, Reside had Mike Derepentigny on the outside as the green flag fell again. Reside quickly went into the lead with Cody Aumen and last season’s Champion Ryan Wade moving up to second and third respectively by lap five. On lap twelve, Aumen moved to the inside of Reside and grabbed the lead with Wade also moving up a notch one lap later. Kyle Cottam moved up to run third on lap fourteen dropping Reside back to fourth. On lap eighteen, Wade went to go to the inside to pass Aumen and there was slight contact causing Wade to spin out bringing out the yellow. On the double file restart, Aumen held the inside groove with Reside choosing the outside lane. Aumen grabbed the lead again with Reside driving in the second spot followed by Cottam and Derepentigny. Aumen had no trouble driving to the win followed by Reside, Cottam, Derepentigny, and Chris McInerny rounding out the top five positions.

Rob Scott and Brian Bickford shared the front row fow the start of the Richlock Rentals Non Wing Sprint Car Feature event with ten cars if the field for thirty laps of racing. On the very first lap Wayde Heckford slammed into the wall between turn one and two causing lots of damage to his Sprint Car but thankfully he was not hurt. On a full restart, Bickford took the lead while Mark Stuart jumped from his sixth starting position to run second with Scott running in third. On lap seven Stuart took over the lead with Jeff Bird jumping into the third spot two laps later. On lap thirteen Bird grabbed the second spot dropping Bickford back to third. Over the next several laps, Bird closed right up on Stuart and they just completely checked out on the field setting up an epic battle for the lead. Lap after lap these two drivers blasted around the Langford oval at a terrific rate of speed with Bird trying high and low to get by Stuart. On lap twenty-six the yellow came out as Chris Root spun around on turn four. On the restart, Stuart had Bird again on his back bumper but he still had the lead. Racing side by side Bird led lap twenty-eight only to have Stuart take the lead back and hold on for the win by a narrow margin. Bird was a comfortable second with Scott, Paul Verhagen, and Bickford rounding out the top five positions. Obviously the over heating problems that Bird suffered last season has been cured as he followed Stuart to his first win in a Sprint Car at Western Speedway in a very thrilling display of driving. If this is a sign of things to come in this Series, fans are in for a treat as this was a very closely contested race. All winners received their trophies from Trophy Girls Chahala and Karleigh at Victory Square.

The next event, at Western Speedway is “Princess & Pirates” night that will feature the kids young and older dressing in their favorite costumes, the Demo Cars, Demo Trucks, the Figure 8s, and the Bombers going head to head for their second race of the year. Anyone in full costume gets a free pass for this fun filled event. There is also a very popular boat race and a fireworks display scheduled for this night. Qualifying begins at 5:30, with racing to start at 6:30.

The Keg Late Models will run Twin 50 lap main events on Saturday Night, this will be the first of four race nights at Western this season that will see the Twin 50 format. Series organizer’s Steve Copp, Bill Smith Jr., and Daryl Crocker have been very busy in the off season securing a ten thousand dollar year end points fund, that will be paid out to the top ten in points at year end. This should produce one of the most competitive Late Models seasons in many years at Western, headlining the drivers that are slated to compete include last years Late Model Champion Jason Terasenko from Vancouver, along with Victoria drivers, Wade Bland, Rory Smith the 2010 Late Model Champion, Brandon Carlson, Darrell Midgley, and Vancouver’s Harvey Hogenboom who will share driving duties in his car with Victoria’s Gary Smith.

The Richlock Rentals WILROC Non Wing Sprint Cars look forward to a banner year as car count is expected to reach the 18 to 20 count several times this year. This class continues to grow in these tough economic times with a strict set of rules and regulations that allow a top quality car that can be run on a limited budget. Victoria’s Jesse Dardengo will be back to defend his championship in the potent Scotty Sprinter along with team mate Chris Root from Sidney, other drivers expected to fight for the championship include Victoria drivers Deter Lejeune, Ron French, the father and son team of the Verhagens, Paul and Matt, Robbie Haslam, Shawnigan Lake’s Jeff Bird and up island drivers Lance Wade, Mark Stewart, Wayde Heckford and Shane Woolcock.

The Island Series Stock Cars will make their 2012 debut Saturday Night, leading the way will be five time and defending Champion Ryan Wade, it is unclear at this time if Wade will be able to defend his championship as he has work commitments in the interior. Former series Champion Brian Clutchey is back after running a limited schedule the past couple of years, last year’s runner up Daryl Crocker looks for a good year as he hopes to debut a brand new car on Saturday Night. Others expected to fight for the championship include 2011 Rookie of The Year Cody Aumen from Duncan, Victoria drivers Dave Reside, Kyle Cottam, Brandon Hutchison, Mike Derpentingy and Chris McInerney, along with Ladysmith’s Dan Myers. A good group of Rookie of the Year contenders include 2011 Bomber Champion Brandon Steen in the ex Aaron Wilke car, 2011 Demo Truck Champion Kevin Knight and Rhett Smith.

The next event at Western Speedway will be Saturday May 26th for The Q Princess and Pirate Night that will feature Fireworks, the popular Boat Race along with Demo Car and Truck action, Bombers and Mini Figure 8’s.

The still air around Western Speedway came to life Saturday night as racing began for the 2012 season as the Demo Cars, Demo Trucks, Figure 8s, and the Bombers opened the 58th year of operation at the famed oval. April Reidie, the talented singer with the Turnpike Bandits, got the evening going with the National Anthem followed by Trophy Dashes, Heat races, and Feature events for all classes.

Mark Lockhart was the first winner of 2012 driving his #77 Camaro to a Trophy Dash win in the Bomber Series. Chris Stone was also a winner in his Trophy Dash. Other Dash winners were Cody and Brandon Young in their respective races, George Haywood won the Demo Truck Dash, and Robin Trotter won the Demo Car Dash. The Heat race winners included Cody and Shawn Young as they won their respective races in the Figure 8 Class, George Haywood in the Demo Truck Series. Bobby Cyr and Mark Lockhart won the Bomber Heats, and Joe Liberatore won the Demo Car Heat.

Eleven cars took the green flag for forty laps of racing in the Figure 8 Feature event led by last year’s Champion Kyle Rizok with James Young sharing the front row. This bunch of drivers got a lesson in the school of hard knocks as it featured real hard hitting right from the drop of the green flag. Rizok got out to the early lead with Brandon Young and Kail Beck moving up to challenge within the first few laps. On lap ten, Beck took the lead from Rizok as behind them Shawn Young and Cody Young were on their way forward. On lap sixteen Shawn took the lead with Cody moving into the second spot. Beck was the recipient of a hard hit as the rear axle was almost disengaged from the rest of the car but he managed to limp through a few extra laps until a mechanical black flag caught up to him sending this warrior to the pits. On lap twenty five Rizok moved back in contention regaining the second spot with Cody now running third. On lap thirty, Cody again took the position away from Rizok as the field was now somewhat diminished as cars fell by the wayside. Up front, Shawn continued to lead and when the dust settled, he was the only car left on the lead lap finishing first after forty laps on his triumphant return to Western Speedway. His brother Cody finished second, on his return, with Garrett Dougan, Rizok, and Rhett Szevics rounding out the top five.

Three Demo Cars and three Demo Trucks took to the track in a combined Feature event scheduled for fifteen laps. Kenny Baker had a brand new truck and gained the lead on the first lap. Normally trucks are to hit only trucks while cars are to hit cars but that really doesn’t happen as they were bumping everything. Kenny Baker took top honors in the truck while Robin Trotter took out his friend Kirk Peacey with just two laps remaining and took the honors in the Demo Car Series.

Last season Bomber drivers had to keep their cars over the 20 second lap time or suffer a stop and go penalty and this season this rule still applies making for a double challenge to said drivers. You have to beat the competitors as well as that clock which isn’t easy in the heat of competition. Gilles Cyr entered the evening with a beautifully prepared car and suffered the penalty in the Dash followed by another penalty in his Heat race beating the 20 second lap time. Mark Lockhart was on his way to a clean sweep as he entered the Feature event for the Bombers with eighteen cars lined up behind the new Dodge Ram Pace Truck for forty laps of racing.

Tyler Woods had the pole and got the early lead after nailing the front stretch wall in qualifying and making the repairs for the Feature event. Lockhart moved quickly to take the lead on lap five with Woods running second and Sean Staniforth moving into third and Bobby Cyr taking the fourth position. On lap eleven, Staniforth moved into the second spot with Gilles Cyr taking the third spot two laps later. On lap fifteen, Lockhart suffered the stop and go penalty sending him to the pits and surrendering the lead to Staniforth. Over the next few laps, Bobby and Gilles Cyr battled back and forth for the second spot as Chris Stone moved into the mix running fourth. On lap eighteen Gilles was too fast and suffered the twenty second lap penalty once again having to go to the pits. On lap twenty five Bobby took the lead with Brendon Moore moving up to run second dropping Staniforth back to third. Over the next couple laps and running very close together both Staniforth and Bobby Cyr got busted for fast times and drove to the pits. Chris Stone drove to the lead with Aaron Cameron now in the mix as the earlier penalized drivers were coming back through the pack. Gilles again was too fast getting a second penalty while Staniforth gained on the frontrunners running back in the second position by lap forty five. On the last lap Staniforth gained the lead and went on to win an eventful Feature race. At Victory Square he learned that he was mistakenly given the black flag penalty in the tight racing and when asked about that. His reply was, “That will teach you to black flag the wrong car”. Cameron held on for a second place finish with Woods, Lockhart, and Stone rounding out the top five positions.

The next event at Western Speedway is the season opener for the Stock Cars, the Richlock Rentals Non Wing Sprint Cars, and the new Keg Steakhouse & Bar Late Model Twin 50’s. Car counts are expected to be high in each Series and should provide great competition. Don’t forget the new early start time of 6:30 PM each and every race date for 2012.
