Haslam Wins Tuff Stock Car Feature
Langford, BC. May 17, 2008:

Finally, Mother Nature smiled on Western Speedway Saturday night giving the fans a very warm night to watch four classes of great racing on the track. The action wasn’t long in coming as four of the fastest I.M.S. 4 Mini Stocks went into turn four, four wide in a Trophy Dash. Matt Mansell, Lois Pollard-Grant, Ryan Patterson, and Alex Mouner all wanted the same real estate and Pollard Grant came out with the lead but it was Mansell that come out with the win.
Sixteen Mini Stocks lined up for a thirty lap Feature event with Sean Constantine on the pole. With the drop of the green flag, Constantine got out first followed by Glen Percival and Gilles Parenteau. On lap 7, Parenteau took over the 2nd spot and behind him a great battle was taking place between Chad Dobranski, Matt Szauer, Ryan Patterson, Pollard-Grant, and Matt Mansell all racing side by side and bumper to bumper looking for position. The yellow came out as Glen Percival, who had been running up front, spun out on lap 12. On the restart, Constantine got away again and had Parenteau and Dobranski on his rear bumper. Mansell got into this mix very quickly and put pressure on the leader as he moved to the outside of Constantine on lap 16. This lasted for about three laps when something misfired with Mansells car and he had to go to the pits. Constantine finished it off from there taking the win followed by Parenteau and Ryan Patterson. Pollard-Grant, the point’s leader, placed fourth.
Robbie Haslam had a replacement driver for the No. 22 Sportsman car as he was driving the #95 Stock Car for Ryan Wade. Mike Haslam took over the helm of the #22 and won the Trophy Dash and Heat 1. Unfortunately, the car dropped a valve and Mike could not get into the Feature. Mike has been racing at the Bull Ring in Las Vegas over the last several years but he certainly hasn’t lost his knowledge and appreciation for Western Speedway. Mike was a consistent winner in all classes he raced at the local track.
The Feature event for the Sportsman class was a race between two brothers and Champions. Brent and Geoff Morris got to the front and chased one – two until Geoff set his brother up nicely and grabbed the lead from the outside groove on lap 17 and went on for the win. Gord Quaite was third in this event.
Ron Simpson had the pole with Doug Morton on the outside for the start of thirty laps of racing for the Old Timers Racing Association Feature event. Cars changed positions quickly over the first four laps but by lap four, Jesse Dardengo moved from his 7th start position to the lead. Dennis Morneau also moved quickly to the 2nd spot by lap 6. On lap 6, the yellow came out as Larry Joyce slammed the backstretch wall. He was unhurt but his night was done. George “The Jet” Jenson moved up by lap 9 to run in the 3rd position while Dan Morneau moved up through traffic to run fourth one lap later. Morneau finally got to Jenson and passed him for third by lap 17. This running order stayed intact until Jenson dropped out with just a couple of laps left. Dardengo held off Dennis Morneau for the win and Dan placed third behind Dennis.
Nineteen V.I. Stock Cars lined up for fifty laps of racing in one of the most competitive classes at Western Speedway. Courtenay’s, Larry Graham, held the pole with Buck Ford on the outside. With the drop of the green flag, Graham got out to the early lead and a ton of cars all looking to get by. The first yellow came out very quickly as Josh Reaume, Ray Anderosov, Jim Steen, and Rory Smith all got into a spin through turn one. On the restart, Graham again grabbed the lead followed by Trevor Emery and Chris McInerney. Just a couple of laps of green and the yellow came out again for a collision between Dave Reside and Don Hallgarth in turn two. On the restart, Graham again enjoyed the lead but had Rob Haslam right on his bumper. Haslam wasted no time in taking the lead on lap 16 while behind Graham, Mike Dibblee moved into the mix along with Kirk Peacey. Over the middle laps positions changed often and quickly. Anderosov, the victim of a couple of spins, worked his way up to run with the pack as well. Dibblee had a great race going but on lap 21 his car quit and he had to be brought to the pits. Over the last few laps, Haslam again stretched his lead while Anderosov took the 2nd position on lap 35 leaving Peacey to finish 3rd followed by Graham and Brandon Carlson placed fifth in yet another tuff Feature for the V.I. Stock Cars.
