Hornets Stung By Bumblebee:
Langford BC, June 19, 2008:
Thursday Night Thunder started right where Wednesday Night Fever left off last season with the debut of the Hornet Cars and the new Bumblebee class last night. Four dashes, no less than nine Heats and two Main events entertained the 150 – 200 fans that showed up for this first race. Forty plus cars qualified for this event with upwards to sixty plus expected in the near future as more and more cars are built or completed. Daryl Crocker last year’s Champion is back as well as Ian Fraser and Phil Lagan who ran one-two-three in last season’s points chase. Steve Copp, who’s Company Steve Copp Construction, sponsors the series has a car that seems very fast along with other notables from the Stock Car Series such as Robin Trotter, Marc Parkinson, Troy Tarbuck, Rory Smith, and Darrell Midgley who also has credentials.
New names include Rose Root, Cassandra Musfelt, Jordan Bey, Garrett Smith, and Laura-Ashley Grant making their debut in Hornets and Bumblebees. Rose Root showed the guys how to stay on the inside lane and beat them all to the checkered flag in the 6th Heat driving a great race. She also led the Feature event, for the rookies, for seven laps before she got tagged by a couple of cars and she spun out giving the lead to Jay Ahrens after the drivers got all sorted out in the turn two mishap. On lap fourteen Matt Playle grabbed the lead for five laps. Another tangle up front on the last lap left the door wide open and the B-Feature event trophy went to Cassandra Musfelt stinging the rest of the field.
Ryan Thompson had the lead for the first four laps in the A-Feature, for the experts, and gave it up to Marc Parkinson for one lap who in turn gave it up to Rory Smith for the next two laps. On lap eight, Robin Trotter, who started tenth, took over the lead and had to deal with lapped traffic and constant pressure from a former Champion Rick Potillion and Thompson who worked back to finish third. Trotter said that it was a lot of fun in the post race interview at Victory Square.
As one field of cars left the track the new field was ready to go in none stop action for two hours. Banging, pushing, shoving, and top notch racing was common the whole way around the inside oval and promises to get even better. The next event is scheduled for Thursday, June 26th for this series so mark your calendar. For five bucks this show is well worth the money.
