Langford, BC, June 21, 2008.

Western Speedway presented a Military appreciation night with the Naden Band as part of the race program featuring the Island Dwarf Car Series, the Sportsman Series, and the V.I. Rental Stock Car Series Saturday night. The fans were treated to a great rendition of the National Anthem played by the renowned Naden Band Maritime Forces Pacific led by Director Chief Petty Officer Second Class Josh Van Der Linden.
The first series of racing to hit the track was the Island Dwarf Cars with Dave “The Hammer” Emmerson setting a new track record at a 17.705 then a follow up with a first place finish in the Heat race. He used a lot of patience waiting for the cars in front of him to go high through the corners then darting low and going by for the eventual lead. In the twenty-five lap Feature, Gord Kraus held the lead for the first three laps and surrendered that to Emmerson on the fourth lap. Behind him Jeremy Stevens took over the second spot on lap five and Ike Armitage moving to third on lap eleven. As the laps were dwindling, there was a great race that included Gord Kraus, James Dore, and Don Bonasky, each one fighting for the fourth spot. No one had anything for Emmerson as he went on to the win in front of Stevens and Armitage.
Tyler Clough led the Sportsman Feature for the first two laps until he got passed by seven time Champion Tim Christy. Christy built a great lead while behind him Clough, Morley Axelson, and Geoff Morris battled lap after lap for the second spot. Axelson and Clough raced door handle to door handle for several laps allowing Brent Morris to also get into the mix. On lap fifteen, debris on the track caused a yellow flag, something that Christy did not want to see after building such a great lead. He now had Geoff, Axelson, and Brent Morris right on the bumper. Axelson got turned around by Brent sending him to the back of the pack on lap seventeen. Christy managed to hold off Geoff over the last eight laps for the win while Brent managed to come back from the rear to finish third.
The early woes with the V.I. Rental Stock Car Series seems to have ironed themselves out as the fifty lap Feature event went almost without any major incidents. Jim Steen and Trevor Emery led the charge to the green flag, thrown by guest starter the Official representative from Maritime Forces Pacific Air Force, Major Bernie Trembley. Steen grabbed the lead for the first two laps then Emery took over for the next five. Shane Scott moved from his fifth starting spot to the lead on lap eight. Brandon Carlson and Rory Smith battled hard for those first eight laps finally taking second and third respectively on lap nine. Behind them Ryan Wade, Brian Clutchey and Ray Anderosov were trying to wind their way through traffic. Going through turn one, Smith blasted into the second spot sending Carlson back to third. The battle behind him now included Aaron Wilkie, Brian Clutchey, Ryan Wade, Buck Ford, and Anderosov all in a tight pack. After a short caution, Smith tried to get the inside of Scott but couldn’t quite get the lead. The battle was heating up for third spot back.
From lap seven through the middle laps, Clutchey, Wilkie, Wade, Emery, Anderosov where in an all out war for every spot they could get. Wilkie, Clutchey, and Wade tried racing three wide through turn three and four. Kirk Peacey made his way from his fifteenth starting spot to get into this mix also making three wide racing with Anderosov and Clutchey. Wade finally got the fourth spot on lap twenty-nine with Peacey pushing Anderosov, Wilkie, and Clutchey back to seventh, eighth, and ninth respectively by lap thirty-two. Up front Scott and Smith had got away from the pack by several car lengths and left Carlson, Wade, and Peacey to battle for the next positions. The yellow came out on lap thirty-seven when Emery broke down. Scott again led the field back to green followed by Smith in hot pursuit. Wade Finally got by Carlson on lap fourty-four for the third spot but the battle behind did not stop until after the checkered flag fell. Scott held on for a great win followed closely by the young Mister Smith and Wade. Carlson hung on for the fourth spot while Anderosov nipped Peacey for fifth in a very clean and breathe taking event. Again this race could have been won by any one of eight different drivers as they are so close and competitive in this series.
During the intermission the Naden Band again played several songs on the front stretch much to the delight of a very appreciative crowd showing support for our troops where ever they may be trying to keep us free.
