Smith Rules Hornets:

Langford BC, July 3, 2008:

Race fans again were treated to Western Speedway’s Thursday Night Thunder program with the Hornets and Bumblebees. Ryan Davies won the Rookie Dash while Rose Root took the Bumblebee Dash. Rory Smith began his terrific night by capturing the Hornet B Dash with Daryl Cahill taking the A Dash.
The action started very quickly as Mike Melin spun in turn one and collected six of the nine cars running. This wreck included track promoter Darrell Midgley. His car suffered a broken front axel but the crew replaced it and had it ready to go for the Feature event of the night.
Carrie Shaw and Rose Root shared the front row for the start of the Rookie Feature event  Seventeen cars took the green flag with twenty laps to determine a winner. Ryan Davies grabbed the lead after just one lap and quickly walked away from the field on the way to the checkered flag. The real battle was for second and third with Root, Cam Stanfield, Garrett Smith, and Steve Parkinson. Smith got tangled up with Root, on lap ten and suffered a cut tire ending his bid to move up. The other three in contention traded positions almost every lap with Parkinson taking the second spot on the last lap and Stanfield holding on for third.
Ten cars started the B-Main with the top two gaining the right to run the Feature event of the night. Brendan Moore got out to a fast start leaving Mike DeRepentigny, Ryan Thompson, and Brent Morris to battle behind him. With only fifteen laps to determine a winner, everyone was dicing for positions. When the dust settled, Moore got the win with Brent Morris taking the second spot by mere inches over Thompson.
Rory Smith started first and fast in a twenty car field for twenty laps of Feature event racing. On this night no one had anything for this young man. Hot after a good run in the Stock Car Series, Smith led from start to finish in a green to checkered flag race. This completed a clean sweep for Smith in a tuff series to accomplish this feat. He won the Dash, his Heat and then the Main in an impressive drive all night. Daryn Cahill and last year’s Champion Daryl Crocker battled for several laps behind Smith. Crocker caught Cahill and made the pass for second on lap thirteen. Cahill held on to place third.
July 10th is the next race in this series and the full Saturday Hornet Car Nationals slated for July 12th. The drivers will be using the tight inside track and should prove interesting and entertaining as each Thursday event has been. Invitations have been sent to other tracks that feature Hornet Car Series so we should have a great car count to compliment our local guys. Come out early for the best seats.
