Montgomery Adds Roy Smith Memorial:

Langford BC, July 5, 2008:

Whitney Williams opened last nights big race program with a great rendition of O’Canada as Western Speedway hosted a six series event that included the Island Dwarf Car Series, I.M.S. 4 Mini Stocks, V.I. Rental Stock Car Series, Sportsman Series, WilRoc Lites, and the high octane WilRoc Sprint Car Series. The night included Trophy Dashes, Heats, and Feature events for all classes.
The WilRoc Sprints had their share of incidents during their Heat. Guy Barrett entered the pits with a small fire under his car. The crew remedied the problem and his night would continue. Matt Mansell slammed the front stretch wall and had to go to the pits. Crewmembers from various teams worked feverishly to get the car repaired in time for the Main event.
The Island Dwarf Car series lined up for twenty laps of racing running for the Jim Pridge Memorial Trophy. Dave, “The Hammer” Emmerson starting from the sixth spot again waisted little time in getting to the front. Emmerson took just a lap and a half to grab the lead from Bob Pridge and quickly built a substantial lead. On Lap seventeen the yellow came out for a spinning John McNabb. Again Emmerson got a quick jump and started another run away from the field. After one more caution, Emmerson went on to the win followed by Bob Pridge and Ike Armitage. Emmerson is the leader in the points chase and has dominated this series all year.
Kevin Knight, making his first start in the I.M.S. 4 Mini Stocks shared the front row with Dave Isles for the start of their Feature race. Before the green flag could wave the field was stopped and it was determined that Lois Pollard-Grant’s car was leaking oil. This was tough break for the point’s leader as she had to go to the pits and lost a lap or so while the crew made repairs to her #97 car.
Chad Dobranski grabbed the lead on the fourth lap and held on for the win. He did have a challenge from Matt Szauer who was all over the back bumper from the fifth lap. Isles held on for the third spot. Dobranski’s win in the Feature gave the driver a “clean sweep” as he won the Dash and his Heat race.
Another driver putting together an impressive season was seven time Western Speedway Champion Tim Christy. Christy took the Trophy Dash, two Heat races, and set fast time to begin his night. He started fifth in the Feature event for the Sportsman Series and made the pass for the lead on lap six after a good tussle side by side with Ken Hearns. Christy walked away from the field to complete another “clean sweep” this season. Noticebly missing were the fast cars of Brent and Geoff Morris who suffered crashes or problems at Saratoga Speedway and couldn’t make this show.
Natalie Garrett and Jim Giles shared the front row for the start of the WilRoc Lites Feature race but Deter Lejeune grabbed the lead before one lap was complete. He held that position for the first six laps surrendering the lead to Mark Parkinson on lap seven. Jack Hawes slammed head long into the wall, between turn one and two, bringing out the red flag on the seventh lap. Hawes was checked out by medics and found to be OK. His car, however, suffered severe damage from front to back in the collision. On the restart, Parkinson again led the field to the green flag but gave up that lead to Jessie Dardengo on lap twelve. Dardengo went on to the win followed by Robert Morneau and Parkinson hanging on for third. Dardengo had an impressive night as he won two Heats earlier.
Gentleman Jim Steen led the field to the green flag in the V.I. Rental Stock Car Feature event. Dave Reside grabbed the lead on lap two and held same until he was passed on the twelfth lap by young Cory Smith. Behind him Ryan Wade was working through traffic from his fourteenth starting spot. By the eighth lap he had moved into the fourth spot running behind Shane Scott. Wade took the third spot on lap thirteen, second spot one lap later and started to reel in Smith running three tenth of a second faster than the leader. The laps ran out and Smith took the checkered flag with Wade on his bumper and Reside hanging on for third. Kirk Peacey and Brian Clutchey also worked up to battle in the top five with Peacey holding the fourth spot at the finish while Clutchey had to go to the pits with a flat tire as the laps ran out.
Gary Smith and Duane Zeinstra shared the pole for the start of forty laps of racing for the Roy Smith Memorial Trophy with the WilRoc Sprint Cars. Ron Larsen made the pull all the way from Quesnel to take part in this race. Larsen spent many years with the Cascar Series and won a race here at Western Speedway several years ago. He won an earlier Heat race this night. Chris Schmelzle took over the Randy Vincent car for this race. The best move of the night belonged to Guy Barrett as with just a couple of laps in the books he done a 360 going though turn one and two and kept on going. Jeff, “The Hurricane”, Montgomery used only three laps to grab second from his fifth starting position to run behind Zeinstra and dropping Smith to third. On lap nine, Randy Price and Darren Yates touched wheels going through turn one with Yates slamming the backstretch wall hard bringing out a red flag. Price was the only driver to post a sub fourteen second lap in qualifying with a 13:98. Yates was Ok after the collision but his car suffered severe damage to the front ending his night. Zeinstra again led the field to the green with Montgomery all over his bumper. On lap twelve Montgomery blasted by Zeinstra going through turn four on the outside to take the lead. He quickly began to open a sizable lead over the rest of the field. Meanwhile Scott Aumen was making his way forward taking the third spot behind Montgomery on lap ten and then taking second to chase Montgomery again on lap fourteen. On lap twenty-five Montgomery was coming up on heavy traffic just as the yellow came out for a spinning Rob Scott on turn four. Montgomery now would have Aumen right on his rear nerf bar for a restart. On that restart, Montgomery got a great jump and began his bid for another sizable lead. He would go on to take the checkered flag adding the Roy Smith Memorial Trophy to his credits. Aumen held on for second. After a great deal of work by many, Matt Mansell made an impressive run to take the third spot.
