Cahill Grabs Hornet Win:

Langford, BC, July 17, 2008:

Western Speedway presented another great Hornet and Bumblebee event Thursday night. Bumping and grinding for every inch was evident as the program consisted of Trophy Dashes, Heats, and Main events. Time constraints even allowed for a couple of fun Features, Rose Root won the Bumblebee Dash and also her Heat race, and in fact, the Heat race wins were spread out between several different drivers including Daryl Crocker, Mike McPeek, Daryl Cahill, Steve Copp, and Bill Peacey.
Darrell Midgley and Copp waged a good battle in the fifth Heat and that would be the case again in the Feature. Copp hung on for the win in this race but the Feature, circumstances would prove different.
Kevin Marshall and Peter Kupiak had the front row for the start of the twenty-five lap B Feature. Marshall grabbed the lead for the first two laps and was overtaken by Kupiak. He had the lead through lap nine when the #55 car driven by Garnett Bartlett came from thirteenth and took over the lead using the outside groove. The battle behind him was close with Kupiak and Garrett Smith hounding each other on every lap. The checkered flag belonged to Bartlett followed by Kupiak and Mike McPeek who came out of the mayhem with two laps remaining for third.
Rocky Sandhu and Steve Copp brought the field of twenty cars to the green flag for another twenty-five lap Feature. Right behind them was Darrell Midgley and Brent Smith itching to grab the lead. Copp got the jump thus beginning a marathon battle with the hard chargers behind him. Meanwhile further back a few other fast cars were coming through tight traffic looking for the lead pack that included Daryl Cahill starting well back in twelfth, Caleb Van Bree, Phil Lagan, and Rory Smith. Copp lead for the first eighteen laps always dogged by Midgley who tried inside and outside to get by. At the same time Smith was doing the same trying to get by Midgley. On the tenth lap Cahill was up on Smith’s bumper playing the same game. On the next lap Cahill made the pass into third and had Midgley in sight. These four drivers played cat and mouse side by side and bumper to bumper for a good ten laps never letting the other have any advantage. On lap seventeen, Cahill took over the second spot for two laps, took the lead for four laps when Midgley grabbed the lead for two laps and always Copp, Smith, and Cahill very, very close. Cahill, seeing the white flag coming used everything he had and rounding the last corner won the drag race to the checkered flag ahead of Midgley with Copp holding off Smith for the third place finish.

This race has to go down as one of the best races of the year in this series. Each driver drove clean, fast, and never gave up the effort to hang on to the spot. They can renew the fight on Friday night when they run as part of the One “Hot” Weekend program with nine classes running. You can see the Hornets and Bumblebees again when they renew the Thursday Night Thunder program on the Twenty fifth.
