Wade and Aumen Victorious on One Hot Weekend:
Langford BC, July 19, 2008:
Night two of Western Speedway’s Annual One Hot Weekend event began with a tragic crash during hot laps. Brandon Hutchinson and Jim Giles got together on the front stretch and hammered the wall hard with Giles coming very close to flipping over. Hutchinson was OK but Giles was taken to hospital and word was he suffered compound fractured vertebra in the crash. We wish Jim a speedy recovery.
The entertaining Hornet Classes were the first to run their Feature event on the big oval with a total of forty one cars on the track at one time. As usual, their banging and shuffling positions were evident with each corner and at one point in the race five or six cars piled up on corner one. Darrel Midgley got the lead and held that for several laps. The one thing that is not seen on a regular basis is that, after a caution, the lead car is very close to the back marker lined in single file. On restarts it was particularly interesting as the back markers had to rely on lights or the speed of the car ahead as they could not see the starter wave the flag. With five laps remaining in this race Midgley got spun out on the front stretch ending his bid for the win. That honor went to Phil Lagan.
No one had anything for Mike Noyce as he walked away winning the Claimer Feature event followed by Eric Fournier. Al Goldie returned to Western Speedway and captured the Dwarf Car Feature event followed by Miles Maxie. Tim Christy held off a hard charging Geoff Morris to capture the Sportsman Feature fulfilling a perfect weekend for the seven time Western Speedway Champion. Jim Rankin survived a good battle with Bob Martin and Bob Sexton, driving for Dan Morneau, and took the checkered flag in the Old Time Racers Association Feature event.
Kevin Knight and Glen Percival shared the front row for the start of the I.M.S.4 Mini Stock Feature. Knight lead for several laps and had a good lead. Mike Derepentigny started to reel in the leader as Sean Constantine, Ryan Patterson, Knight, and Lois Pollard Grant were having a battle of their own behind the two lead cars. On lap twenty one, the red flag came out as Patterson, Matt Szauer, and the #96 car slammed the back stretch wall. All cars suffered a lot of damage but the drivers were OK. On the restart the battle up front continued while behind them Pollard-Grant took over the third spot twenty-four laps gone. She reeled in Constantine on lap twenty-eight and moved up to second and the top three cars battled bumper to bumper for the last two laps with Constantine trying one last time to retake second but fell short.
At any one time you could see as many as twenty drivers and crew members working on the WilRoc Lite car driven by Brandon Hutchinson and wrecked in the hot laps collision with Jim Giles. As a result he would share the front row for the start of the WilRoc Lite Feature event. He led the first lap but got overtaken by Marc Parkinson on lap two. On lap six, Jesse Dardengo took over the lead and never looked back. Rob Morneau took over the second spot on lap eight followed by Deter Lejeune. As Morneau was coming up on Dardengo racing for the lead Morneau touched the wheel of the leader sending his car in the air a bit. Dardengo kept the hammer down while Morneau had to check up and eventually went to the pits. Dardengo went on to the win followed by Lejeune and Parkinson.
The Jerry Ferrie Memorial Trophy was up for grabs for the V.I. Rentals Stock Car Feature event as Jim Steen and Chris McInerney lead the field to the green flag. Before the first lap was complete, Buck Ford and Brian Clutchey got together with Ford smashing the front stretch wall ending his night. Clutchey was able to continue but had lost his power steering. After five laps the lead was held by Dave Reside followed by Rory Smith, Mike Dibblee, and Kirk Peacey. On lap sixteen Smith passed for the lead and two laps later Wade had taken the second spot. Wade and Smith traded the lead back and forth for several laps until Wade finally got clear on lap twenty-nine. He would continue to put space between him and Smith who finished second ahead of Reside.
Joe Dardengo had the pole for the start of the WilRoc Sprint Car Series Feature event. On his outside was Rob Scott. As they headed for the first turn, Dardengo spun right in front of Randy Price and Mitch Egner with Price slamming the broadside of Dardengo’s car. Egner got stopped before hitting anything. Dardengo had to go to the pits, while Price was able to refire. On the Restart, Randy Vincent now had the outside and immediately grabbed the lead. Darren Yates, Rob Scott, and Scott Aumen went through turn one three wide with Yates and Aumen looking to move up. On lap two, Guy Barrett had taken over the second spot and now had Aumen right behind him Jeff Montgomery moved into the battle by lap thirteen and started to stalk Aumen. Through the middle part of the race, the struggle would continue with Aumen, Barrett, Montgomery, and Vincent. After a short yellow for spinning cars, Montgomery tried to get a good jump but had to check up as Aumen put the pressure on Vincent. On lap twenty, Aumen made the pass and took over the lead with Vincent now holding second and Barrett all over his nerf bar. Barrett got by Vincent on lap thirty but by this time Aumen had a pretty good lead. Vincent meantime had to contend with the hard charging Montgomery just to hold onto the third spot. On lap thirty-two, Montgomery passed Vincent and finished third behind Barrett in second. As Barrett crossed the line however, the motor locked up and they figured it could be done. Aumen who took the checkered flag claimed the Billy Foster Trophy for this win in another very fast and competitive WilRoc Sprint Car race.
