TIMES COLONIST PRESENTS THE FIRST ANNUAL
"ONE HOT WEEKEND"

Wade Hot For “One Hot Weekend”

Langford BC. July 6

Friday night’s opening round of the race program dubbed “One Hot Weekend” at Langford’s Western Speedway had a little of something for everyone. A live band called Superglide entertained fans on the outside, Dwarf Cars, the IMCA Modified Series, Sportsman Series, the new Hornet class, The Stock Car Series, and the always fast and exciting WilRoc Sprint Car Series all qualified for Saturday’s big night of racing for the first ever Times Colonist 350 Championship.
The Hornets using the big oval for the first time opened with their Trophy Dash with #43 Josh Reaume taking the win. Bill Crawford and Deter Lajeune picked up wins in heat races for the Hornets. The IMCA Modified Series followed with their Trophy Dash with Tony Johnson picking up the win. Miles Maxie and Gord Kraus won Dwarf Car Heat races and Tim Christy won the Sportsman Series Heat race. Robert Orr and Gord Percival picked up victories for the IMS 4 Mini Stock Series in heat race action.
Brad Davis weaved his way through traffic and with only three laps remaining grabbed the lead and the win in the Feature Event for the Hornets. Matt Mansell and Jeff Bird won their respective Heat races for the WilRoc Series. Randy Price broke a drive shaft during the Strawberry Cup event on the 23rd of June and suffered a whack in the leg. During Heat Race action on this night, the same thing happened again. Randy was taken to hospital with some muscle injuries as well as another whack about in the same place.
The Western Region Rental Jack FM Stock Car Series took the green flag for fifty laps of racing for a $1000 payout. Kerry and Jim Steen raced side by side for the first three laps when Kerry got the edge and assumed the lead. Over the next few laps there was a lot of battles for positions as the faster cars were trying to get to the front. Ryan Wade seemed to be on the move from his fourteenth starting spot and was up to third by lap eight and by lap 12 took over second from Ken Hearns. Another driver trying to move through the pack was Brian Clutchey from his fifteenth starting spot and was running fifth.
On lap 18, the yellow came out for a car spinning out on the backstretch. Over the first 18 laps Kerry Steen had built a sizable lead only to see it disappear with this caution. On lap 21 Wade made the move to the inside of Steen and took over the lead. Brian Pickford who had a strong run going finally gave up the third spot to Clutchey on lap 23. The field up front stayed relatively quiet for several laps and on lap 36 Buck Ford got turned around bringing out another caution.
It was Wade’s turn to see a big lead dwindled away by the caution flag as on the restart he had Steen and Clutchey on his rear bumper. With the drop of the green flag, however, Wade got away clean again. Steen had his hands full with Clutchey all over him. On lap 44, Steen wiggled just a bit but enough that Clutchey could make the pass for second.
Wade was too fast this night and grabbed the win followed by Clutchey, Steen, Rory Smith and Curt Haugen in the top five spots. Wade was very happy at victory square when presented the Feature Event trophy and the big cheque for the $1000.00.
