Goldstream Gazette and the Q 100.3fm present Demo Cars,
Demo Trucks, Mini Figure 8’s and Claimer

Wild, Wild, Night

The wild and whacky world of Demo races lived up to its billing Saturday night at Western Speedway. Roll overs, hard licks, tuff walls, and another “clean sweep” were the norm this night as the Demo Cars, Demo Trucks, Crazy Mini Figure 8s, and Claimers took to the track for Dashes, Heats, and Main Events.
Even the Dash races, in each class, tried going the “wrong” way around the Langford oval but Chris McInerney figured it out as he took the Claimer Trophy Dash, Craig Holfeld won the Truck Dash driving for Bill Shire, Billy Stidston came first in the Demo Car Dash, and Cody Young won in the Figure 8 class.
Shawn Hitchings led the final lap to the checkered flag ahead of Morgan Giles and Shawn Conarroe to win the first Figure 8 Heat and Cody Young placed first ahead of Dennis Smith and Kyle Ridley in the second Heat.
Anthony Reaume took the checkered flag first in the Claimer Heat followed by Chris Broughton. Teresa Johnson crossed the line in third however Chris Tabbernor was also in this fight and as they both went into turn one at full speed Tabbernor forced Johnson high and as they both were under heavy braking, Johnson locked her brakes and slammed hard into the turn two wall. She then came back down across the track and came to a stop to the inside of the curve. She was unhurt but done for the night.
Paul Verhagen led the second Heat followed by Mike DeRepentigny and Woody Woodruff as Eric Fournier was moving through the pack from the rear. By lap six, Fournier had the second spot and eyes on the leader. Going through turn three and four Fournier took over the lead on the very last lap and took the win followed by Verhagen and DeRepentigny.
Barry Morrison won the Truck Heat followed by Holfeld and Dave Cates in what was one of the more routine races of the night.
The Demo Car Heat race was anything but routine. Smokin Joe Liberatore took the lead with the drop of the green flag but as the cars were exiting turn two, Jim Young, Doug Richens, George Haywood, Mel Jeffries, and Billy Stidston all battled for position. Young spun around, sliding over the grass, and into the hay bales putting his car up on its side and sitting on the hay bales. This would end his night. Liberatore had the lead again on the restart but got taken out by Mike Makow, Haywood got taken out, Stidston had a short lead, and every half lap there was a new man at the front. When the dust settled, Richens took the win followed by Haywood and Makow.
Kyle Ridley led the Mini Figure 8 Main for several laps but his car quit on turn two. As with the Demo Cars, leaders changed with every lap. Cars quit, hard licks took out contenders, and while this was taking place, Young worked his way through the mayhem and emerged with his second “clean sweep” as he led Brad Watkins and Bryce Muir to the checkered flag and the Wayne Clark Memorial Trophy.
Aaron Frofton grabbed the lead first in the Claimer Main event followed by Brian Wakelin by the second lap as Fournier and Broughton were on the move from the back of the field. On lap 8, Morgan Giles came to a stop bringing out a yellow flag cutting the big lead that Crawford had built up. On the restart, Broughton got the jump on about three cars and took over the second spot. Just as he accomplished this feat the yellow came out again as Giles went over the turn three embankment bringing out a red flag.
On the restart, Frofton got away first leaving the fight for second between Wakelin, Anthony Reaume, McInerny, and Mike Dash behind him. On lap 13, Frofton spun out on his own going through turn two and Reaume had no place to go and slammed hard into the broad side of Frofton’s’s car bringing out a red flag. He was taken to hospital for observations.
Mike Dash led the field back for the restart with Wakelin, DeRepentigney, Fournier, Broughton, and McInerny in a close battle for second. Fournier split McInerny and Wakelin to take over second as Broughton followed him through for third on lap 16. Dash held the lead for the remainder of the race to capture the Gary Madden Trophy. Chris Broughton placed third but took the Mid Season Championship and the Jeff Wilson Memorial Trophy.
Holfeld led most of the Demo Truck Main but Dave Cates caught him on the last lap and gave him enough of a bump to get to the inside and take over the lead and the win. Oldfeld followed in second with Shepperd taking third.
Haywood led the first several laps in the Demo Car Feature race. As was the case all evening, drivers changed positions on a regular basis with lots of hitting, spin outs, and lead changes. Doug Richens finally got to Haywood and took him out taking over the lead and the win. This marked the second time he has captured the Barry Goodwin Trophy. The long time photographer was on hand to present the Trophy to the hard charging driver.
