Big Rigs, Mini Stocks and Hornets

Glen Creed: A Big Rig Winner

Langford’s own Glen Creed pulled a risky move and came out with the win in the Big Rig Feature Event at Western Speedway Saturday night. Going three wide with a stock car is risky enough but with a Big Rig truck it is not always recommended but, as Creed proved, it can be done even at Western Speedway.
The “Hornet Series” replaced the IMCA Modified Series for the show last night and led the action with Trophy Dash wins for the #06 Phil Calman car and the #09 Kelly Orr car. Chad Dobranski and Justin Woodske were winners in the IMS 4 Mini Stock Trophy Dashes while Troy Pidherney and Cam Sully picked up wins in the Big Rig Dashes.
Heat races produced wins for Robin Trotter in the #23 car while Dean Bowers, driving the #1 car, got the victory in the Hornet Heat A race. Sean Constantine and Gilles Parenteau won the IMS 4 Mini Stock Heats while Pidherney and Sully came away with a win in Big Rig Heats.
The Hornet class is fast becoming a popular series with both fans and drivers. They bang and push each other around each race night and Saturday was no exception. Using the big oval for only the second time drivers sometimes ran five wide on their march for positions. Of course the bigger track means higher speeds and heavier hits than on the smaller inside oval. Through all of this the series produces a very entertaining and competitive form of racing. Dean Bowers had his hands full trying to hold off Daryl Crocker over several laps of Main Event action with Dean Pickup’s #57 car also getting  into the battle coming in third.
The IMS 4 Mini Stocks produced some of the best racing this series has had this season. Sean Constantine led the first of thirty laps with a huge bunch of cars battling side by side and bumper to bumper behind him. By the fourth lap, Robert Orr took over the lead while Lois Pollard Grant moved into fourth spot followed by Mitch Egner. Over the next several laps Orr began to check out as Constantine, Gilles Parenteau, Pollard Grant, Mitch Egner, and Justin Woodske all wanted to move up.
By lap 15, Egner had cleared the pack and was out by himself running second while the intense battle continued behind him with Pollard Grant and Parenteau trying for the third spot along with Woodske.
Meanwhile, Egner began to reel in the leader and on lap 26 Egner moved to the outside of Orr and on the following lap took the lead out right. Orr continued to put the pressure on the new leader but couldn't retake the lead. Egner took the checkered flag ahead of Orr followed by Lois Pollard Grant in third. This is one of the best races Pollard Grant has put together this season as she battled with the best all evening.
The last time this series raced I made an error with the cars of Alex Mourner and Matt Szauer and their starting position. I apologize to these two drivers in particular and the IMS 4 Mini Stock Series.
Ten trucks lined up to take the green flag for thirty-five laps of thundering hard charging Big Rig racing with Bobby Fowler, in a Chevy, and Mike Hird in an International on the front row. Glen Creed, the hometown hero and a fan favorite Peter Van Dyke, lined up in the eighth and ninth spot respectively.
Troy Pidherney got out on the green flag lap and crossed the line first followed by Hird, Tirrell Schmidt, Darren Berdahl, and Creed. On the second lap, Schmidt spun out and collected Creed with both trucks heading for the turn one wall bringing out a yellow flag. On the restart, Pidherney still led with Hird, Fowler, Berdahl, and now Cam Sully in the top five. On the fifth lap Creed had moved up to take over the third spot while Darren Berdahl was stalking Pidherney’s big Kenworth for the lead. On lap 10, Creed had moved up to now challenge Berdahl for second with both drivers after Pidherney as they were coming up on lap traffic. Creed went three wide down the backstretch, not only passing Berdahl, but also Pidherney with a high risk maneuver with such a big vehicle. The fans erupted into a loud cheer as Creed came out of turn four and crossed the line with the lead fourteen laps down. Just a couple of laps later, the yellow came out for some debris left on the track closing up the field once again.
On the restart, Creed led the field followed by Pidherney and Berdahl engaged in the battle for the second spot while Van Dyke finally got by Cam Sully for the fourth spot. On lap twenty-four, Berdahl had cleared Pidherney for the second spot when the yellow came out again, this time for a spinning Schmidt.
On this yellow Pidherney came into the pits with overheated rotors ending his night.
On the restart, Creed brought the field to the green flag with Berdahl, Van Dyke, and Sully all bumper to bumper. On lap thirty, and coming out of turn four, Creed went a little sideways but the former Demo Champ kept his big Louisville Ford under control and managed to hang on to the lead.  Berdahl was not able to complete the pass even though he mounted a good challenge with this little slip by Creed. Over the final few laps lap traffic did not hold up the front runner and Creed held on for the win followed by Berdahl, Van Dyke, Sully, and Hird rounding out the top five. Creed wanted this race as it now ties him with the big Peterbuilt “Pinkfoot” truck of Van Dyke and gives the local driver two consecutive Feature Events in Big Rig competition at Western Speedway.
