IMCA Series Returns To Western Speedway

The IMCA Modified Series returned to Western Speedway after a five year absence Saturday night. The very light occasional rain drops did not stop the full program of Trophy Dashes for the IMCA Series, IMS 4 Mini Stocks, the Island Dwarf Cars, and the Western Region Rentals Stock Car Series. Winners of the Trophy Dashes included Jeremy Stevens; Dwarf Cars, Lois Pollard Grant; IMS 4 Mini Stocks, Trevor Boyes; IMCA Modified Series, and Brian Clutchey; Stock Cars.

Gord Kraus and Jeremy Stevens were the winners in Dwarf Car Heat races while Chad Dobranski and Robert Orr were victorious in the IMS 4 Heats. Dobranski was under constant pressure from Sean Constantine over the last few laps in the B-Heat. Constantine tried high and low but couldn’t muster the power to complete the pass on Dobranski. The IMCA Heat saw Trevor Boyes take the checkered flag ahead of Wheeler Boyes and Chris Beaulieu. Curt Haugen and #97 won the Stock Car Heats.

Chad Dobranski jumped to the early lead followed by Constantine and Orr in the IMS 4 Mini Stock Main Event. Matt Mansell worked his way forward to take the third spot on the seventh lap and quickly disposed of Constantine for second one lap later. Mansell and Dobranski ran side by side for a couple of laps when the yellow flag came out because of a spin in turn four and just as Mansell was about to take the lead on lap eleven. Dobranski’s lead, on the restart, was short lived as Mansell passed the leader going through turn four on lap twelve and taking the checkered flag ahead of Dobranski. The hard charging Rod Rendle crossed the line in third in his new pick up styled ride.

Gord and Shane Kraus shared the front row for the Dwarf Car Main Event with Gord taking the lead early. On lap four, Bob Pridge spun going through turn one and Bob Greenaway, trying to avoid the spinning car, grazed the turn two wall sending him to the pits for the night. Jeremy Stevens spun on his own a few laps later but this spin did not cause a caution flag however it did put him a lap down. On lap nine, he uncharacteristically spun again this time bringing out the caution. Steve Jacques moved into the second position by the sixteenth lap. On lap eighteen, Al Goldie and John McNabb, in a big battle for third, tangled a bit bringing out another yellow. On the restart, Jacques got the jump on Kraus and took over the lead and went on to the victory ahead of Kraus and Bob Pridge.

Ten IMCA Modified cars took the green flag in the Feature Event with Brad Purdy taking the early lead. He had Trevor Boyes all over his rear bumper with the rest of the pack jockeying for position. On lap four, Wheeler Boyes and Tony Johnson got together bringing out a yellow flag. On the restart, Purdy still had the lead followed by Boyes and now with Campbell River’s Chris Beaulieu in hot pursuit as well. Over the remainder of the race there was a serious battle for the top three positions but Purdy held on for the win with Boyes and Beaulieu keeping the second and third spot respectively.

Twenty-two beautiful Stock Cars took the green flag for the start of forty laps of bumper to bumper racing. Hugh Gurney had the pole with Rich Lejeune on the outside. Gurney took the lead early and Rob Haslam, driving Ryan Wade’s #95 car, moved into the second spot. Brian Clutchey jumped from seventh starting spot to the fourth position in only four laps. Haslam then took the lead and began to stretch it out to a big lead over the next several laps. Behind him several cars, that included Shane Scott, Curt Haugen, Clutchey, and Kerry Steen, were in a battle to reel in the leader. Clutchey slowed dramatically going down the backstretch with very little power and everyone blowing by one of the favorites. His problem was in the rear end with power to just one wheel. With eighteen laps in the books, Haslam still led with Kerry Steen, Shane Scott, and Curt Haugen now in the battle for position. Haugen moved to the second spot on lap twenty one but still a quarter lap behind the front running Haslam. This all changed on lap thirty-two when a caution flag came out for a car stopped on turn four. On the restart, Haugen was on the rear bumper of Haslam ready to challenge for the lead however Haslam again pulled away and cruised to the win followed by Haugen and Scott hanging on for third. These guys only have to wait a week to renew the battle as they are schedule to run again on the 28th along with the IMS 4s and Dwarf Cars.
