OLD TIME RACERS ASS'N. - RON MAYELL MEMORIAL TROPHY
MONSTER TRUCK EXHIBITION SHOW
KATANA BOAT LATE MODEL SERIES - CANADA 200 RACE

It was quite an entertaining evening for the fans who witnessed many aspects of the motorsports world.  The O.T.R.A. portion of the show saw Dan Morneau set fast qualifying time over the 18 car field.  The B Dash win went to Bob Martin and the A Dash was captured by Brian Eaton from Trail, B.C.  It was a very special victory for Brian as he has had only one previous win and has had a very tough season this year.  The 40 lap O.T.R.A. Main Event saw Jessie Dardengo take an early lead over Bob Exton and Dan Morneau.  Dan moved up into second place on lap 26 then finally overtook Dardengo on lap 34 to capture the victory.  A large number of the Ron Mayell family were on hand to present the trophy.  Ron had a long career in the sport as he held numerous official positions, especially as a flagman in the fifties - a duty he assumed again when the O.T.R.A. was formed in 1977.  He was also inducted into the Victoria Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 1987 along with Reg Midgley.

During the evening, the Monster Trucks gave a few superb
demonstrations of jumping over and destroying groups of cars as well as
wild wheel standing exhibitions.  Quite a crowd pleaser!

The late model sportsman cars of the Katana Boat Series had 24 cars qualifying, with Campbell River's Jason Beaulieu setting the pace with a new track record of 16.92.  B Dash action saw Nanaimo's Otto Bahati enjoy the win.  The A Dash was taken by Ken Jorginson of Surrey.  All 24 cars took the green flag to start the Canada 200 race.  Victoria's Cody Brown surged into the early lead and held on until Delta's Dave Hemrich took over.  Track promoter Darrell Midgley worked his way into 2nd on lap 61, by the 80th lap his car began to smoke heavily and he exited to the pits on lap 91 with a huge rear end fire.  The race was halted on lap 93 for a scheduled re-fueling stop.  On the restart, Dave Hemrich maintained his first place position while five other cars close behind him jockeyed back and forth.

On lap 130, Victoria's Dale Robinson experienced the same misfortune as Midgley with a burning rear end.  On lap 137, a yellow flag was displayed as two of the top four drivers got together.  Series point leader Korbin Thomas and Tim Christie were then sent to the rear of the pack for the restart.  Jason Beaulieu was right behind Dave Hemrich from lap 125 and tried as hard as possible to pass, but when the checkered flag flew, he had to settle for second as Dave was unbeatable on this evening.  Congratulations were very evident in Victory Square as Dave won the famous Canada 200 race which was initially run in 1972 with Ross Surgenor being the very first of many reputable winners over the years.
