U.S.A. Pitches Shut-Out
Fifteen year old twin sisters, Lisa and Angela Harris, opened the race program with a beautiful rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner” and “Oh Canada” for the Can Am Demo Team Challenge presented at Western Speedway Saturday night.
The team from the U.S.A. finally found a way to beat the team from Canada on this night by getting a few more Canadian drivers in their cars. Bolstered by Greg Sagamoen, Marty “McFly” Hansen, “Psycho” Bill Connor, Randy Matoski, and “Dr. Death” Keith Hansen, Team U.S.A. virtually shut out Team Canada in the fifteen minutes of anything goes. By the end of just a couple of laps, there were no Canadians left running and that left the U.S.A. team unchallenged. Seven American cars were still running at the end and they seemed content just to give each other a friendly bump as they circled the track. After loosing over the last three years Team U.S.A. were ecstatic as they gathered for a team picture at Victory Square led by Team Captain Rob Meyers out of Washington State.
Trophy Dash wins went to Matt Verhagen; Claimers, Bill Shire; Demo Trucks, Doug Richens; Demo Cars, and Kyle Ridley; Figure 8s.
Figure 8 B Heat race provided the fans a great battle between Brad Watkins and Pete Brozik as they traded the lead back and forth around each tire. Broziack won out in the end as Watkins got turned around and finished third. Cody Young won the A Heat followed by Sean Hitchings and Dennis Smith.
Teresa Johnson took the checkered flag in the Claimer B Heat while Chris Broughton took the A Heat. Cory Nightingale returned to Demo Truck action and piloted Mark Lefebvre’s #66 to Victory Square in his Heat race. Craven Moorhead and Marty Hansen won the Heats for the Demo Car Series.
Imagine, if you will, a nice shiny sedan, a two-door hardtop, or a just a good practical car to get around with. Now add the Monster Moose and what you have left is just a pile of twisted, tortured metal. True, these junkers had long lost their shine but they were able to be identified before the “Moose” took over. Brad Campbell, in the 10,000 lb Monster Moose got serious air time as he lifted the front end of the big Ford, sporting about 1200 HP, and came crashing down on said junkers. After a few passes by Campbell in his behemoth there was little left of what was once a brand new car and the near capacity crowd loved every minute.
The Figure 8 Feature was just another in a long line of tuff racing. Several drivers had the lead for a few laps but in the end, young Kail Beck came away with the win followed by JJ Taylor and Cody Young.
Brandon Giles and Scott Tabbernor shared the front row for twenty laps of racing in the Claimer series. It didn’t take long for Chris Broughton to get to the front as he took over the lead with six laps in the books. On lap 8, Morgan Giles spun in turn one leaving no where for the #98 car, driven by brother Brandon, to go. Brandon slammed into the front end of Morgan’s car doing some serious damage to both vehicles. Both drivers walked away talking about the hit as they made their way to the pits.
On the restart, Broughton brought the field back to the green and with the drop of the flag the “Pastor of Disaster”, Tim Davis dove to the inside of Broughton and took over the lead. Davis has not raced in a while but there was no rust on this driver this night as he cruised the rest of the way to the checkered flag followed by Broughton and Brian Wakelin.
Richard Milne driving in only his second race won the Demo Truck Feature race followed by Cory Nightingale and Dave Cates. Brad Smith used a lot of patience and timely hits and worked his way to the victory in the Demo Car Feature. He was followed to the finish by #18 and Kevin Knight. This race was a tuff, hard hitting, affair from start to finish. Doug Richens, the points leader, only lasted a couple of laps as he suffered car problems. George Haywood was also out early, and Smokin Joe Liberatore could not get his car to go.
Liberatore continued his efforts to raise funds for the Cops for Cancer introducing Jack Knox, a writer for the Times Colonist and supporter of the Tour de Rock, to help raise funds. If you combine the comedy event organized by Liberatore, the head shaves, and the canvassing at the track, they raised in excess of $7,000.00 for the cause. As well as a popular driver, his tireless campaign for these charities, should not go unnoticed and a big thank you and congratulations to Joe and his team of volunteers. |
