Floer Wins First Feature

Ryan Floer, driving in his first year with the WilRoc Sprint Car Series, won his first Main Event of the season Saturday night capturing the Billy Foster Memorial Trophy. Bad weather again threatened to scuttle the race program as a huge rain cloud covered the Langford oval while all the surrounding area basked in sunshine and clear skies. By late afternoon, the skies cleared and efforts by push trucks, crew members, photographers, and anyone else who could drive were successful in drying the track even though it did cause a delay with the start time.
Trophy Dash wins went to Daryl Crocker and Matt Schultz in the Hornet Class, Miles Maxie and Carl Carlson Jr. in the Dwarf Cars, and Matt Mansell and Cam McLean in the WilRoc Sprint Car Series.
Long time track photographer, Barry Goodwin, received a dedication award by the WilRoc Series for his outstanding contributions to the organization at the same time Trophies were presented to the Trophy Dash winners.
Jeremy Stevens and Shane Kraus won their respective Heat races in the Dwarf Car Series, Phil Lagan and Matt Shultz took the win in the Hornet class, While Gord Smith and Duane Zeinstra were victorious with the Sprint Car Series.
Daryl Crocker had won two Feature events in the Hornet Class on the big oval but on this night he hit the wall hard sending him to the pits with serious suspension damage ending his night very early. Matt Schultz led the first six laps until he gave it up to Phil Lagan who then led for the next five laps. Over the few remaining laps, the lead changed as did the positions behind the leader. Phil Calman worked his way from his thirteenth position to take the win while Ian Fraser used the last lap to slip into second spot dropping Schultz to the third spot in yet another entertaining Hornet race.
A big field of sixteen Dwarf cars took the green flag for thirty laps of Main event racing with Gord Kraus and Carl Carlson Jr. sharing the front row. Don Banasky was also back in the field after suffering the worst crash in this series since they began racing at Western Speedway. Kraus took the lead with Carlson Jr., on his tail for the first twelve laps. By lap seven Jeremy Stevens moved up to the fourth spot and got into great racing with Shane Kraus and Carlson Jr. racing three wide and side by side for several laps. Stevens finally got the second spot on lap thirteen just as Carlson Jr. spun out going through turn three and four. After a short caution period Gord Kraus led the field again but now had Stevens on his bumper. Over the next few laps Stevens tried high and low to get by Kraus but couldn’t get it done. On Lap 20 the race was stopped for a big crash on turn four between Tyler Peters and John McNabb. Peters spun out and with no where to go, McNabb slammed into the side of Peter’s car. Both cars suffered considerable damage. McNabb seemed to be ok and Peters went to hospital for further observations. On the restart Kraus still led Stevens and now Shane Kraus and Bob Pridge behind with the race shortened to twenty-five laps. Again Stevens and Gord Kraus battled side by side and inside out over the last few laps with Shane Kraus right there too. On lap twenty-four Kraus and Stevens got locked together surrendering the lead to the winner Shane Kraus with Bob Pridge second with Stevens recovering for a third place finish.
Ryan Floer and Mark Fisher led a field of sixteen cars to the green flag for a forty lap Feature for the WilRoc Sprint Car Series. Floer grabbed the lead followed by Fisher and Jeff Bird for the first four laps when Matt Mansell took the third spot from Bird. Points leader Scott Aumen and Guy Barrett had a battle of their own for the fourth and fifth spot until Barrett got by on the ninth lap. By lap sixteen, Floer got a big lead while Mansell battled Fisher for second taking that spot on lap seventeen. Mansell began reeling in the leader on every lap until a yellow came out on lap twenty-seven for a spinning Rob Scott. On the restart, Floer ran away again until another yellow came out. Aumen got a huge jump on the restart and passed both Fisher and Barrett taking the third spot by lap twenty-eight and then passed Mansell on lap twenty-nine for second. Over the remaining laps Floer held off any challenge and cruised to the win in the Billy Foster Memorial race. He was followed by Aumen and Guy Barrett in second and third respectively. Floer captured his first Main event victory this season after setting a track record at Vernon just a couple of weeks ago and has been close so many times with a very fast car. If you are a fan of Sprint Cars the best news is the series will race for the Championship on October 6th, as they try and make up races lost to Mother Nature in 2007.
