Jim Young took the checkered flag first in a very wet Demo Car Feature Event at Victoria’s Western Speedway Saturday night.
Light showers plagued the race track all evening but the hardy fans, drivers, and officials ran the program slated for the evening anyway.
Scott Tabbernor scored a win in a Trophy Dash and his Heat race for Claimers while Cody Young scored wins in the Dash and Heat in the Figure 8s as well. JJ. Taylor also doubled in wins with a Heat Race and the Main Event for the Figure 8 Class.
Scott Tabbernor had the pole for the start of a twenty lap Feature Event and grabbed the early lead with the drop of the green flag in the Claimer Division. Erik Fournier fell into the second spot followed by Chris McInerny and Chris Broughton.
With three laps gone, a yellow flag slowed the pace with Tabbernor still leading. When the field took the green, Fournier used the inside line in turn four and took the lead from Tabbernor with Broughton and Brian Wakelin also moving up in positions. One lap later, Broughton took the lead away from Fournier with Wakelin still holding third.
Fournier had to check up for lapped cars going through turn four allowing Wakelin to take over second using the outside lane. Just a couple of laps past midway, Wakelin spun on the slippery track and Fournier moved into second spot again.
Broughton had a good lead and never looked back as he took the checkered flag followed by Fournier and Wakelin, despite the spin, hung on for third.
Demo Cars and Demo Trucks combined forces for the start of the Demo Car Feature. Mike Makow took the lead with Tyler Clough, driving the #63 car, in second followed by Jon Earl and Jim Young. Bill Sheppard hit the front stretch wall nine laps down bringing out a yellow flag.
On the restart, Young wasted little time taking over the lead with Clough in second and Darin Thibault moving into third. Young received a stop and go penalty and Clough took over the lead with Thibault right behind him. Young re-entered the race still in third place and within striking distance of the leaders.
A yellow flag on lap 14 placed the three lead cars bumper to bumper making for an interesting finish on the wet surface. Clough led with the drop of the green flag. Young tapped Thibault spinning him out and now set his sites on Clough with the laps running out. George Haywood moved into contention taking over the third spot.
Young tried a couple of times to take out Clough but the young charger hung on until he tried to take out a slower car coming down the front stretch. At the same time Young caught Clough giving him enough of a tap to take him out and with that grabbed the lead on lap 17. Over the last three laps, Young was challenged by Doug Richens but he held off the charge and took the checkered flag. Richens followed in second and Clough got back for a third place finish.
